It is usually recommended to run only a single antivirus on a computer system to avoid any risk of conflicts, but the developer of SmadAV Antivirus urges you not to rely on the product alone. You can use this antivirus, but you mustn’t uninstall the one that already exists on your system.
SmadAV Antivirus is designed to act as a sidekick to your existing antivirus software. It is made to deal with various threats hidden in flash drives that escape from standard malware detection, but there isn’t any reliable source that reports on how effective the detection is.
Features and Highlights
With SmadAV Antivirus, scanning doesn’t take a long time as long as you choose the fastest scanning option available. It’s not the speed that makes the scan fast, but rather the scope of the scan. Instead of scanning everything, it scans only particular areas.
If you have time to spare, you can run the full scan that will check all drives and system areas for malware. The system areas include memory processes, services, start-up, and registry.
SmadAV Antivirus adds a new command in the context menu automatically. It is called “Scan with Smadav” that appears when you right-click on one or several files. Clicking on that command will trigger SmadAV to perform a scan on those selected files. When the scan is finished, a small window pops up above the notification area where you can see the report. If you want to see more information about the scan, click the Detail button.
Just a word of caution, there is an option that will send statistic reports to the developer if you leave it be. It shows up in the installation wizard and enabled by default, but even if you disable it there is no guarantee that it will respect your choice, so it would be much better if you just block it entirely from connecting to the internet.
SmadAV Antivirus looks so simple that it doesn’t seem worth it to upgrade to the Pro version, but be prepared to get annoyed if you keep using the free one. When you launch the antivirus, a nag screen appears that tells you to upgrade it. When you finish a scan, the notification nags you again. And when you scan files from the context menu, it appears again even before the scan runs. The notification is pretty annoying that it seems like the antivirus is designed to harass free users as often as possible.
SmadAV Antivirus Free Download for Windows
SmadAV Antivirus offers a secondary protection against malware, but if a highly popular antivirus solution like BitDefender or Kaspersky fails to detect a threat, how high the chance would be for a much less known antivirus to be able to produce a better result?
The good news is that it is available for free so you can find out on your own on how well the antivirus performs. Once you confirm that it is indeed a good one, you can continue using it for free or upgrade it to get rid of the persistent annoyances.
