WinBox Mikrotik provides a GUI-based environment to control Mikrotik routers. While the routers can be configured from a Command Line Interface (CLI), GUI is a much more user-friendly option. Note, however, that some advanced configurations aren’t supported in it, so you still have to use CLI every time you need those configurations.

Many users have been relying on WinBox Mikrotik to manage their routers. Being officially developed and released by Mikrotik, there is no doubt that the software is a reliable one, but it is just another part of the main reasons for its popularity.

Features and Highlights

The developer of WinBox Mikrotik has worked hard to make its interface to be as intuitive as possible for most users. It has two modes: Simple and Advanced. The simple mode layout is the default one, which can be switched to advanced mode from the Tools menu. The latter reveals more loader parameters when you enable it.

WinBox Mikrotik has a toolbar at the top of its interface. It is the place which you can right click to add several info fields that you want to stay visible. To the left, there is a menu bar containing menus and sub-menus that change according to the installed package. The largest area located on the right side is the work area where you can see all the open menu windows. These windows cannot be dragged out of the main window because of the MDI interface that WinBox Mikrotik adopts. Each of them is referred to as a child window.

Each child window has a toolbar that contains a set of buttons such as Add, Remove, Enable, Disable, Comment, and Sort. A search input field can also be found at the toolbar. Every item that matches the text you enter in the field are highlighted in the search result.

It takes time to configure a router, so it is important to back up the configuration so that you won’t have to do it again from scratch when you need to apply the same configuration either on another router or the same device. The backup file that you create can be protected with a password to prevent anyone else from opening it without your permission. After the backup is created, you can create copies of the backup if necessary.

There is a Safe Mode in WinBox Mikrotik. It is especially useful when you’re going to do something risky as it can roll back the changes that have been made since the mode was invoked. This particular feature can give you a confidence in experimenting with some configurations. Note, however, that it may take a while to for changes to rollback.

While it is useful, Safe Mode can also be your nightmare. Let’ say you have spent hours struggling to finally figure out the best configuration, but you forgot to turn off the Safe Mode when shutting down your PC. As a result, all your hard work get undone by WinBox Mikrotik.
